A TYPICAL 10:00 SERVICE at St. Andrews

St. Andrews Anglican is a liturgical church, which means that our services follow a regular pattern.

Our 10:00 service follows the Anglican Book of Alternative Services (BAS). A typical service is more or less like this:

OPENING HYMN - Priest, lay minister, and choir process to the front as we all sing. Our main hymnbook is Common Praise (CP), but we use others as well.

GATHERING OF THE COMMUNITY: set prayers, found on page 185 of the BAS.

GLORIA: Glory to God in the highest - usually sung.

COLLECT FOR THE DAY: A short prayer.

CHILDREN'S TIME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS: The children come up front for a short talk by our priest, Canon Neil, before going to Sunday school. At St. Andrews we also ask for any upcoming birthdays and anniversaries in the congregation, and sing the Birthday Song and the Anniversary Song while the children are going down. We've also recently added a short children's song which the children (and the congregation) learn together.

After the children go to Sunday School we have our announcements, many of which are also listed in the bulletin.

PROCLAMATION OF THE WORD: Each Sunday we have an Old Testament reading (the First Reading), a Psalm (printed in the BAS), a reading from the New Testament letters (the Second Reading), a Gradual hymn, and a Gospel reading. Lectors (volunteers from the congregation read the first and second readings, while the Lay Minister leads the responsive reading of the Psalm, and does the Gospel reading.

SERMON

APOSTLE'S CREED, said by everyone.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE: the Lay Minister offers prayers, with congregational responses (usually "Lord, hear our prayer").

CONFESSION: a group confession sin and repentence, read from the BAS.

THE PEACE: we sing a Peace song, and offer one anothe a sign of peace (shake hands with those around us).

CELEBRATION OF THE EUCHARIST:

First we have an OFFERTORY hymn. This is when the collection is taken up.

Then comes the PRAYER OVER THE GIFTS.

The priest then offers the EUCHARISTIC PRAYER, offering one of several given in the BAS.

We sing the LORD'S PRAYER.

The priest continues the Eucharistic prayer with the BREAKING OF THE BREAD.

We sing the LAMB OF GOD.

During COMMUNION, people come up to the altar rail and kneel (or stand) to receive communion. (All are welcome to come up for communion). The choir goes up first, and sings the COMMUNIONS MUSIC during the rest of communion.

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION: a short prayer offered by the priest.

DOXOLOGY: we all sing this - "Glory to God, whose power working in us can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine! Glory to God from generation to generation, in the church and in Christ Jesus forever and ever, forever and ever, Amen!"

BLESSING: The priest blesses the congregation.

RECESSIONAL: We sing the recessional hymn as priest and choir go out. The Lay Minister offers a short going-forth prayer, to which we respond "Thanks be to God!"
